Tigers, aren't they gorgeous animals! It is hard to believe that they are facing extinction.

Tiger characteristics:

size: The heaviest subspecies can reach up to 500 pounds or more, with males heavier then females. Head to body length measure approx. 4.5 to 9 feet.

Stripes: Some people claim that stripes are there to camouflage the tiger from its prey.

life span: Tigers can live up to about 10 years.

Eyes: Tigers have a yellow colored iris's with round pupils. White tigers usually have blue colored irises. The night vision for Tigers is usually 7 times better then that of humans.

Other tiger facts:

live in damp, humid, and hot jungles. They also live in diverse conditions such as icy cold forests.

There are 5 different kinds of subspecies in the tiger family. These tigers would include: The Indochina, Bengal, South China, Sumatran, and the Siberian.

The Siberian Tigers chief prey: would include elk, wild boar, and deer.

White tiger's are the rarest tiger in the world.

Many tigers are killed for their coats and body parts.

Tiger body parts and bones are used in some parts of Asia as worthless aphrodisiacs and medicines. Scientific study has indicated that taking these medicines has no benefit whatsoever.

Tigers are usually solitary creatures.

Tigers are the biggest cats in the world.

Tigers can eat over 60 pounds of meat in one meal.

Tigers are endangered species. Numbers of tigers is only an estimate(4,500-7,000 est. are left in the world)

Tiger hunting and loss of habitat is to be blamed for the loss of the Bali, Caspian, and Java subspecies of tiger. If this does not end we could be looking at the extinction of these beautiful animals.
